Although this is not directly related to mma, it is a very sad story, and Bam Bam did have one professional mma fight for the U-Japan promotion, in which he was thoroughly beaten by Kimo (you can watch the fight by clicking here). The 45 year old Bigelow was found dead in his duplex friday morning, in Port Richey FL ( about 5 minutes from my house), and no immediate signs of foul play were discovered. A full autopsy will be administered.
Bam Bam had a very successful wrestling career in his younger days and he was even named Wrestling Rookie of the Year in 1986 by the Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer. However, recent times have not been very kind to Bam Bam. He was in a motorcycle accident last year injuring himself and his girlfriend, who was riding on back, and was charged for driving under the influence with serious bodily injuries. He also claimed to be broke and “living off of a monthly disability payment.” He had an expensive divorce from his wife and also had unpaid child support for his three children that he no longer saw. Bam Bam battled drug addiction throughout his career.
The Bam Bam Bigelow story is indeed a sad story with a tragic end. I send my deepest condolences to Bam Bam’s family and he will remain in my thoughts and prayers. Rest in peace Bam Bam, I truly believe you are in a better place. Although you are gone, you will never be forgotten.
You can check out the St. Pete Times article on the death of Bam Bam. It is my hometown newspaper. Bam Bam lived about 5-10 minutes from my house and I got to meet him at the local mall and got his autograph. He was a very kind, outgoing man who will be missed dearly by many.
